Cobbs, Allen & Hall was originally founded in 1887 as the John G. Smith Company. The name was changed to Cobbs, Allen, & Hall in the 1920’s to reflect the principles in charge at the time. During the middle part of the last century the business grew in the area around Birmingham, AL as an insurance and mortgage brokerage firm. During the 1980’s the business declined but kept its prominent name and notoriety. In April of 1993 a group of investors headed by current President Grantland Rice, III purchased the business with the intention of growing it beyond the Birmingham area.
At the time of the purchase Cobbs, Allen, & Hall was a small insurance brokerage with offices in Birmingham and Gadsden Alabama writing approximately $10 Million a year in premium with 20 employees. Later that year Bruce S. Denson joined the company as Chief Executive Officer in order to carry out the vision of the investors to grow Cobbs, Allen & Hall into a large regional brokerage. His vision was for the company to grow steadily and organically 15% a year for the next decade. By 2004 Cobbs, Allen & Hall had achieved a new level of success and the vision of growth. With approximately 180 employees with multiple offices in Alabama and Georgia the firm was placing upwards of $300 Million annually in premiums.
In 2000 Cobbs, Allen, & Hall began to focus more on value added services in order to compete with the national brokerage firms for the larger clients of the Southeast. Divisions were established for claims administration, loss control and safety consultation, claims advocacy, as well as an initiative to provide clients with cutting edge risk management and insurance integration software. Cobbs, Allen, & Hall was also asked during this time to become an Assurex Brokerage, a partnerships organization of elite private brokerages around the world. Admittance to Assurex gave Cobbs, Allen & Hall the ability to service clients from Birmingham to Bangladesh and everywhere in between.
Cobbs, Allen, & Hall is employee owned with more than 40 shareholders from the President to the Account Managers.
